the Bridge Table
Inspired by C.19th Timber bridges of the American West.
These structures were built in a modular fashion and used many repeating elements. The joinery is simple- designed to be built on site, modified on site, repairable, redundant. I think it’s Humble Architecture, but I enjoy the absolute efficiency and skill at which these were made.
The construction method and materials could be considered a “democratic populist” structure, much like Early America … because it uses a number of small equal members working together to support the load. Its decentralized mass can also be constructed by many independent hands. Essentially, it’s structurally organized the same way as early America.
To build this, I used a combination of Traditional and Digital woodworking technology. The Table saw, Planer/ Joiner were supplemented by sophisticated CNC router, and Laser cutting tools.
I wanted the table to feel comfortable to the touch, and safe around children too, so the edges and corners are slightly rounded. The glass is a thick 3/8”, low-iron and very clear. It’s a strong piece of glass; very uniformly supported by the structure. A flatcar serving tray rolls the length of the table, making it easy to pass the potatoes!
Pneumatic pin nails secure the joints, with glue, and mechanical notches. The pin nails remind me of how the original bridges were built. The Legs are four detachable towers. and the finish is Natural Birch wood with Clear Lacquer. The table uses only 1 sheet of Birch plywood. It’s very lightweight, yet able to support over 200lbs.
The Bridge Table seats 6 people, measuring 3ft.x 6ft. Custom sizes available.
